Here a different approach to mudra emerges. The mudras in the first section, asana mudras, are methods practised during oneâs asana practice or added to it. The second section, pranayama mudras, involves ancillary, but essential seals, without which pranayama practice would not be possible. The third section, pratyahara mudras, consisted of seals added to our meditation practice, which complements it and makes it more potent. But similar to the pranayama mudras, they do not constitute stand-alone practices and hence do not require a separate time commitment. The current, fourth section of this text breaks this pattern since it contains mudras that constitute practices in themselves. They are dedicated stand-alone practices designed to bring about Kundalini-raising. Raising Kundalini can be utilized for creativity, increase of intellect and memory, achievements in the fields of art and science, and mystical states and revelation. As Gopi Krishna has shown with the example of the evil genius, Kundalini can also be abused for the satisfaction of oneâs egotism276. The person doing so will inevitably meet their own downfall, but in doing so, they can beforehand do much damage. Yogis need to adhere to ethics (yamas and niyamas) and particularly place themselves into the service of the Divine (ishvara pranidhana). The term ishvara pranidhana is of such import it occurs in the Yoga Sutra four times277. I have described a hands-on approach to surrendering to the Divine in How To Find Your Lifeâs Divine Purpose â Brain Software For a New Civilization.
In the current section are covered all mudras supporting the process of dharana. According to yogic mythology dharana was a process readily mastered when during the Treta Yuga278 the Kundalini (divine creative force), previously located in the third eye chakra, dropped down to the lowest two chakras. This took place due to enculturation (humanity developing the erroneous belief we would progress by competing against each other and other organisms, and subdueing and controling nature, ultimately leading us to the yawning abbyss of ecocide and environmental holocaust), entropy, (the breakdown of order caused by time, similar to oxidation and rusting) and collective karma and trauma (comparable to the biblical myth of eating from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil and our subsequent expulsion from the Garden of Eden). I have described this complex process in my previous books Ashtanga Yoga Practice and Philosophy279 and in more detail in How To Find Your Lifeâs Divine Purpose280. Reiterating it here would be beyond the scope of a book on mudras. Ever since this entropic process took place, humans found the process of dharana challenging. Therefore gradually, an entire science developed around raising Kundalini back up to where it rightfully belongs. With Kundalini raised, dharana becomes readily available and dhyana (meditation) and samadhi (revelation) will fall like domino stones.
In the last section, we discussed pratyahara mudras, which deal predominantly with projecting lunar prana, i.e. prana associated with the sense organs (jnanendriyas), back into the body. These include mudras that withdraw prana powering gustatory, olfactory, visual, audio and tactile/kinaesthetic perception.
